 Clothes dryers (9~10kg) show differences in drying performance, drying time, etc.

- Some products show ‘poor’ drying performance at maximum capacity -

 

 

    The Korea Consumer Agency (President Lee, Hee-sook) conducted tests and inspections on the safety, drying performance, time taken to dry clothes, amount of energy consumption, noise, etc. of seven (7) clothes dryers manufactured by the most popular brands* in order to provide information to help consumers make reasonable choices.

* Daewoo Electronics, Dayou-winia, Midea, Miele, Blomberg, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics

 

 

    The test and inspection results revealed that there were no faults in safety (protection against electric shocks, structures, etc.) of all tested clothes dryers, but there were differences in drying performance, time taken to dry clothes, amount of energy consumption, noise, etc.

 At maximum capacity, some products showed ‘poor’ drying performance.

    (Drying performance) On standard (cotton) mode, filled up to 50% of maximum capacity, five (5) clothes dryers manufactured by Daewoo Electronics (DWR-10MCWRH), Dayou-winia (WCH09BS5W), Blomberg (DHP24412W), Samsung Electronics (DV90M53B0QW), and LG Electronics (RH9W1) showed relatively ‘good‘ drying performances.

    At maximum capacity, however, the drying performance of all seven tested clothes dryers lowered compared to when 50% of maximum capacity filled, and there were no products receiving a‘good’score in drying performance. Four (4) dryers including Daewoo Electronics (DWR-10MCWRH), Dayou-winia (WCH09BS5W), Samsung Electronics (EV90M53B0QW), and LG Electronics (RH9WI) showed ‘fair’drying performances, and Miele (TKG540WP) showed a relatively lower drying performance, receiving a ‘ poor’score.

 

 

When 50% of maximum capacity filled, products showed a maximum of 1 hour difference (1 hour 44 minutes ~ 2 hours 42 minutes) in drying time.

  

     (Time taken to dry clothes) On standard mode, filled up to 50% of maximum capacity, the clothes dryers showed a maximum of 58 minute difference in drying time (1 hour 44 minutes ~ 2 hours 42 minutes). And at maximum capacity, there was a maximum of 34 minute difference among the products tested in drying time (2 hours 59 minutes ~ 3 hours 33 minutes).

        - (Time taken to dry clothes when 50% of maximum capacity filled) Midea (MCD-H101W), Miele (TKG540WP), and LG Electronics (RH9WI) recorded the fastest drying time (less than 2 hours), and Blomberg (DHP24412W) showed the longest drying time at 2 hours and 42 minutes.

        - (Time taken to dry clothes at maximum capacity) Miele (TKG540WP) recorded the shortest time at 2 hours and 59 minutes, but received a‘poor’score in drying the performance. On the other hand, Daewoo Electronics (DWR-10MCWRH) recorded the longest drying time at 3 hours and 33 minutes.

        - At maximum capacity, the drying time of the clothes dryers tested increased by a minimum of 46 minutes ~ a maximum of 1 hour and 21 minutes, compared to when 50% of maximum capacity filled. And in a cold winter temperature (5), the drying time increased by a minimum of 10 minutes ~ a maximum of 1 hour and 6 minutes, compared to room temperature.

 

There was a maximum of 1.7-fold difference in energy consumption among the products tested.

    (Energy consumption) On standard mode, when 50% of maximum capacity filled, the dryers tested showed a 1.7-fold difference between the highest (1,593 Wh) and lowest (958 Wh) energy consumption, and at maximum capacity, there was a maximum of 1.5-fold difference (1,576 Wh ~ 2,442 Wh) among the dryers in energy consumption.

        - Miele (TKG540WP) dryer was the most energy efficient. Blomberg (DHP24412W), and Dayou-winia (WCH09BS5W) were the least energy efficient at 50% capacity and maximum capacity, respectively.

    (Annual energy cost) When 50% of maximum capacity filled, there was 22,000 KRW difference between the highest and lowest annual energy cost* (32,000 KRW ~ 54,000 KRW) among the tested dryers, and at maximum capacity, the dryers tested showed a maximum of 29,000 KRW difference (53,000 KRW ~ 82,000 KRW) in annual energy cost.

* Clothes dryers are not subject to the energy consumption efficiency standards in regulations related to efficiency management machinery, equipment or materials, and therefore, the standards for calculation of annual energy cost of washing machine (the amount of energy used [Wh]X210, a unit cost of kWh is 160 KRW, round-off for the amount of less than 100 KRW) were applied to the clothes dryers.

KCA plans to request relevant organizations (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy) to prepare energy consumption efficiency standards for clothes dryers.

 

Four (4) products received relatively 'good' scores in average noise level testing

    (Noise) Dayou-winia (WCH09BS5W), Miele (TKG540WP), Samsung Electronics (DV90M53B0QW), and LG Electronics (RH9WI) dryers received ‘good’ scores in average noise level testing, and Daewoo Electronics (DWR-10MCWRH), Midea (MCD-H101W), and Blomberg (DHP24412W) products were evaluated as ‘fair.’

 

 

 All tested products showed no faults in safety and labeling

    As for the safety (protection against electric shocks (leakage current and dielectric strength), structure (door opening and shutting), etc.), and labeling of the clothes dryers tested, there were no faults in all tested products
